Special Skills/Related Training:
I am a harpist and use the calming music of the harp for relaxation, focusing on breath, and being in the moment with one’s self. I am actively involved in dance, and believe that music and movement reinforce all humankind.
Personal History:
The moment of realizing one could incorporate music and movement in a therapeutic setting was an ‘aha’ moment.
Professional History:
Throughout my career, I have enjoyed being a music teacher in community college, a musician specializing in harp and guitar, a dance studio owner, and a community-centered artist. I was a teaching assistant in Graduate School at the University of Wyoming and actively involved in MENC and Phi Kappa Phi. My major instruments are guitar, harp and saxophone. Throughout my career, I choreographed for community theatre, participated in school outreach, and volunteered in hospitals. After volunteering at a pediatric cancer hospital, I realized the need for music therapy in that particular setting. This is when I pursued a Clinical Master Music Therapy degree at Arizona State University.
Work Philosophy:
My main philosophy is humanistic and my intention is to use a wide variety of interventions to meet the unique needs of each client. This approach involves meeting the client wherever they are at on each individual day. I take into consideration, illness, trauma, physical, social and emotional challenges and aim to be a therapist of understanding and acceptance. Music therapy tools include voice, breath, instruments, movement, creative arts, and humor. No matter what place a client is in, the realization of being able to laugh is crucial and the joy of celebrating life wherever one is at, is something I strive to accomplish during each session. Each session is uniquely tailored to meet specific goals and objectives while using music as the focus to bring about human expression.
Personal Life Philosophy:
To respect myself and others, to lead with my heart, and to use patience, humor and love. Each soul is unique and music therapy allows each person to create, explore and celebrate life as they know it.
